Birth of Saint Nicholas

Saint Nicholas was born in the city of Badala in Asia Minor, present-day Turkey. Born as a child into a wealthy family, his parents were fervent followers of Catholicism, but both of them died at an early age.

He inherited a large fortune, but did not indulge in pleasure, but gave it all away to the poor and needy, while he himself became a monk and devoted himself to the Church, serving the community throughout his life.

He later became a priest and was elevated to the rank of bishop.

Saint Nicholas did many charitable works throughout his life, and was especially fond of helping the poor in secret.

Santa Claus was his later alias, a name derived from the story of his secret deliveries of money to help three girls.

Santa Claus Appears

At that time, not far from St. Nicholas, there lived three beautiful young girls.

Their father was a humble scholar who often lived on borrowed money.

Because of the inability to pay the debt, had to be cruel to the beautiful and healthy third daughter, sold to the debtor to take to Africa as a maid.

When the three daughters found out about this, they embraced each other.

When Nicholas learned of this, he ran to their home and comforted them.

At night, Nicholas filled three stockings with gold, and secretly hung them in front of the windows of the three maidens.

With the gold, they paid their father’s debt, and the three daughters were saved from their fate as maids.

On Christmas Eve, children always hang a pair of colorful socks above their beds.

And put a cup of hot milk next to the socks for Santa Claus to drink, in order to quench the thirst of the hard-working Santa Claus.

Was actually created in the 19th and 20th centuries.

German-American illustrator Thomas Nast influenced the way he was perceived in his appearance.
